Class FAQs

Why are most classes for mixed age groups?

Child development researchers recommend grouping children of a variety of ages because it fosters natural, family-style learning.

Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones. Each child participates at their own level, singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this invaluable Music Together® Mixed-Ages experience.

If I have an infant younger than 8 months, should I register for the Babies Class?

Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies. The Babies Class is specifically designed for non-movers, eight months and younger, and for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in infants, meet other parents of newborns, and learn music activities to recreate at home with Baby.

Infants are also more than welcome to attend a Mixed-Age Class.

What should I expect of my child?

Some children are spontaneous singers and movers, others are careful and astute observers.

Over time at home and/or in class, you may begin to notice your child singing or chanting parts of songs, sometimes with words, sometimes without. However, even when your child gives no response or seems externally not to be listening or participating, important learning is taking place! Read more...

What should I expect for myself?

No prior music experience necessary! If you have some, that’s great, too! All we ask is that grownups willingly participate.

Those with music in their background will enjoy the rich musical experience of classes; those without are an equally valued part of the community too, and may be surprised to notice growth in their own musicality over time. Your child loves making music with you, regardless of your experience or skill. Read more...

What about practicing at home?

There’s no required time commitment, but we certainly encourage integrating the music into your daily life.

Enrolled families receive a songbook and access to download the music collection for each session. Instructions are located inside the front cover of the beautifully illustrated songbook, which you will receive on your first day of class.  Read more…

Do I have to sign up for the whole session?

Yes.

Depending on space availability, families may enroll for a minimum of 6 weeks of a session. Read more…

Do I have to come on the same day/time each week?

Yes.

Enrolling for a specific day and time helps us to keep the numbers reasonable in each class (6-12 children) and allows for the most consistency possible. Children, grownups, and teachers know who to expect when, and can build meaningful connections within the group.

We do offer every enrolled family 2 Make-Up Classes per session, and we do our best to accommodate unexpected schedule changes.
