Allostatic load refers to the the "wear and tear" on the body, which accumulates as an individual is exposed to repeated or chronic stress. That "wear and tear" comes in the form of physiological responses, such as increased cortisol.
Right now, we are all experiencing stress, particularly related to the uncertainty of the current situation. While you may feel less productive, your brain is dealing with the stress and anxiety. Essentially, it's working overtime. Combine that with not having the in-person support of friends and family, and we're left vulnerable to sleep disturbance, anxiety, agitation, and depression.
So, acknowledge that the allostatic load is real, and be gentle with yourself. Carve out time to exercise, get decent sleep, and schedule something fun every day (even if it's just 10 minutes)!
